The beginning of June saw a trio of Scottish rifle shooters make the trek to Bisley to participate in the British 50m Championship. Tom Diggle, Brogan Smith and Ruaraidh Macleod made their way south to compete in both 3P and Prone events amongst a sizable gathering of very capable athletes, including some only recently returned from the Commonwealth Games.
Last night the majority of the athletes from the Gold Coast, including family members who play such a crucial role, gathered for a small athlete's reception at the Crannog in Stirling, before going on to a reception hosted by the First Minister for all of Team Scotland. This was the perfect opportunity to present the 2018 winner of the Bob Aitken Service to Shooting Award, Donald McIntosh, with this award in front of the athletes he has worked so closely with over the last Commonwealth Games cycle.
With Day 9 being about the ladies, the tenth and final day was all about the men. It had already been a fantastic Games for Team Scotland's shooting team at the Belmont Shooting Centre with 6 medals already banked and on the plane home but there was no time for getting emotional as STS athletes were competing in two more events and with all three athletes scheduled to compete already with one medal each at these Games, they were all looking to double their personal tally and increase Scotland's already tally.
Day 9 was an all female affair and had the pressure of keeping up the trend set by the last 3 days of winning at least one medal but with the Women's Rifle athletes competing for the second day in a row and Women's Trap also taking place, there's nothing to suggest it's a trend that cant continue. There is also a look ahead to the Day 10, the final day of shooting at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, where there are yet more medal hopes for Scotland, this time with the men, in the Men's 50m 3P Rifle and the conclusion of the Queens Prize Individual Final.
Day 8 sees shotgun take a break and the Women's Rifle athletes return as they look to repeat their success from the Commonwealth Championships in November last year. We also enter Day 2 of 3 for the Queens Prize Individual Final. There is also a look ahead to the Day 9 schedule which sees the full-bore athletes take a days rest after four straight days of competing but Scotland female rifle athletes are back for a second consecutive day, this time in the 3P, and the Women's Skeet competition finally gets underway.
Day 7 saw the entry of STS's shotgun athletes into the medal charge. Can they follow on from the medal success enjoyed on Day 7 when the Scots compete in the Men's and Women's Double Trap competitions? Also, the 3 day long Queens Prize Individual Final kicked off, less than 24 hours after the completion of the Pairs competition so see how they got on. We also take a look ahead to the Day 8 schedule which is slightly less packed and more of a lie-in for athletes and spectators alike as the Queens Prize Individual Final goes into its second day and Scotland's female rifle athletes return for the Women's 50m Prone Rifle Finals. Will there be more medals in store for STS and Team Scotland?
Day 6 saw STS shooters secure not only Team Scotland's first but also second medals at the Belmont Shooting Ground. Report on some great performance by STS shooters on Day 5 in the Men's 10m Air Pistol competition, Women's 10m Air Rifle competition and Day 1 of the Queens Prize Pairs Final. We also take a look ahead to the Day 6 schedule where the Queens Prize Pairs Final reaches its climax and STS athletes also are competing in the Men's 50m Prone Rifle and Women's 25m Precision Pistol competitions.
This year’s 10m Air Pistol and Rifle Championships was held at Napier University Sighthill Campus in Edinburgh with just under 100 competitors competing over two days. Our competitors came from Scotland, England, Wales, Isle of Man, Ireland, Norway, Bulgaria and Poland. They included a number of athletes who will be heading down under to the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast at the start of April. Our competitors had a wide age range from 12 to 70+ and with a Tetrathlon competition running alongside, there was also the welcome addition of Pony Club members.
Scottish Target Shooting reported last year that HM Inspectorate of Constabulary in Scotland was inspecting the efficiency and effectiveness of the way in which Police Scotland delivers its statutory role as the licensing authority in Scotland for firearms, shotguns and air weapons. Scottish Target shooting played an important role in distributing and contributing to the investigation. On 6 March 2018 the report on this investigation was published.Since the establishment of Police Scotland in 2013, the report notes that efforts have been made to deliver an increasingly consistent and effective firearms licensing service across Scotland. The report welcomes the progress made to date but also notes that there remain areas for improvement. The report notes the following recommendations:
On the 21st December 2017 Birmingham was officially announced as the host city for the 2022 Commonwealth Games following the decision in March by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) that Durban failed to meet the criteria it had set. While this means the Commonwealth Games will once again be held on British shores, shooting was not listed in the sports submitted by the Birmingham bid which raised obvious concerns for STS and its members.
