Alloa & District Rifle Club

Summer 50m Individual League

Results

Carefully following Scottish Government guidelines, Alloa & District Rifle Club opened their outdoor range in July 20.

Within their new way of working, the club is running a 50 metre competition for those members who are shooting outdoors during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

To meet all restrictions, the range is open only 2 afternoons a week with limited firing points available. As a result, only 9 members have been able to take part in the League, but, even without the usual number of competitors, they are thoroughly enjoying being back on the range.

There are 2 Divisions in the Summer League; Division 1 has 4 members and Division 2 has 5 members.

A total of 10 rounds are to be shot before the 20 September.

Match Reports

Round 1

Round 1 Conditions were not the best with the wind gusting from left to right and the sky was overcast.

Division 1

Robin Law is trying out a new extension tube and his score reflects how it is working. Robin Thomson struggled slightly with the wind and its Alloa tricks.

Joe McCarthy lost out to the gauge with two or three squeakers. Davie McKenzie ( the frying Scotsman) certainly battered in the 10 ring.

Division 2

Frank Howden showed that age is only a number with his score of 191 while Brian Robertson struggled to cope with the conditions.

Norrie Steele and Ian Thomson went shot for shot, but Ian seemed to be struggling at the moment. Eric Wilson ( the deer stalker) may be able to shoot a deer but a bull seems to evade him.

Round 2

In Round 2 the wind once again played a big factor in the score lines.

Division 1

Robin Law and Joe McCarthy shoot well with Davie McKenzie and Robin Thomson closing in.

Division 2

Frank Howden just could not get to grips with the strong wind. Norrie Steele was having similar problems while Ian Thomson looked like he was getting back on form

As for our local stalker, well, it looks like someone will have to draw some antlers on the aiming marks, but he tries very hard even though it was not the best conditions for shooting.

Round 3

Division 1

Robin Thomson must have had his weetabix with a fabulous score of 197 with only one flyer out in the 8 ring.

Joe McCarthy had an Ulster fry for breakfast and the soda bread was that good it reflected on his score of 195

Robin law has mastered his new extension tube with a slight improvement on his group

The Frying Scotsman Davie McKenzie did not seem to be watching the wind flags this resulted in a few flyers ( Fryers)

Division 2

(Commonly known as the Senior Citizen League)

Frank Howden and Ian Thomson both had 189 but Frank is senior in age and on the league Table

Brian Robertson our local law enforcer fell by the wayside with a score of 188 he now shares second place with Ian T.

Norrie Steele is struggling with his sight picture at the moment and this reflects on his score.

Round 4

Division 1

Joe McCarthy is using his Irish charm and keeping just in front of Robin Thomson.

Davie the frying scotsman McKenzie and Robin Law are tied in third place with 24 points each.

Division 2 (senior citizens )

Brian the Polis Robertson is only 1 point in front of that auld stalwart Frank Howden. Chasing them, but not too fast, is Ian Thomson.

Norrie Steele has been having some problems with his right elbow and this has reflected on his scores.

The deer stalker Eric Wilson, is trying out a different stock. Shooting outdoors in the wind and rain is a big "No No" when trying new equipment......

Things are starting to get close between 1st and 2nd positions, but Joe is still keeping in front of Robin Thomson by 2 points although gun score and average in favour of of Joe.

Round 6

Division 1

Not a lot of changes in this round, Robin Thomson shot exceptionally well but he still cannot push Joe into 2nd place.

Division 2

Round 7

Division 1

Once again the man from the West our Joe is keeping the Easterner Robin T in their place.

Division 2

Not a lot of changes with Brian just staying in front of Frank by 1 point.

Robin and Davie are neck and neck but Davie has the better gun score.

Round 10

Division 1

Joe McCarthy won this division and had a very consistent shoot over the 10 rounds ending up with an average of 193.90 ex 200.

Robin Thomson was not far behind in both gun score, points and average.

Brian Robertson managed to keep in front of Frank Howden to win this division ending up with 73 points.

Frank Howden was struggling with his vision and this showed in his gun score - he shot some tight groups but they were in the wrong place……

Alloa and District Rifle Club would like to thank all members who have paid their membership this year, and especial thanks to those who have paid, but have not attended the range or shot in the 50m leagues. Your fee payments have eased the financial burden on the club.

I will be sending out the membership forms for the 2021 Summer season in November 2020.

Keep safe everyone and take care.
