It is with great sadness that Scottish Target Shooting would like to share the news of the passing of Brigadier Allan Alstead CBE on the evening of 29 May 2024.
Allan was Chair of the Scottish Target Shooting Federation and led the process that culminated in the formation of Scottish Target Shooting, when he became member no.1 of the new company.
Allan was loved by all that new him and his passing is a great loss to the Scottish target shooting community.
He was born in Glasgow and educated at Glasgow Academy before travelling the world with the Army.
Allan served as in the King’s Own Scottish Borderers from 1954 to 1990. Among his many appointments he Commanded a Platoon in Malaya, the 1st Bn in Northern Ireland and a Brigade in Scotland.
On leaving the Army, Allan moved to Edinburgh in 1990 and held various high-profile posts, including chief executive of the Scottish Sports Council and sportscotland. He was Chef de Mission for the Scottish Commonwealth Games team in 2002 and chairman of city-based charity Mercy Corps for eight years.
As well as his professional roles, Allan was actively involved in a number of voluntary endeavours, of which STS is proud to be one such body he supported and even after stepping down as Chair, he continued to support and keep a keen interest in.
Allan was married to his wife Joy, who sadly passed away in 2019, and has two sons, Robert and Jonathan.
Arrangements for the funeral are still being finalised. STS will notify members of these arrangements once these are known and we will publish a more detailed account of Allan’s life in the coming weeks.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Allan’s family and friends.
