The annual Lawrence Trophy Match, Scotland v England took place at Blair Atholl on Saturday 15th June, during the Scottish Open Target Rifle Meeting.
The teams are comprised of 12 fivers each and the course of fire is 1 sighter and 15 to count at 600x which is then repeated at 500x. Although Blair Atholl did not provide the tricky wind conditions for which it is famous, the wind coaches needed to be alert for gusts and the start of the match was signalled by heavy rain which continued throughout the match and brought its own difficulties, particularly for those using eagle-eyes.
After 600x, Scotland led England by 4 points and 15 v bulls and at 500x pulled 1 point further ahead to win the match by 5 points and 7 v bulls. The match was very close and could have gone either way until the end.
Scotland’s score of 1774.228 was 4 points short of the range record for the Match. But for issues with eagle-eyes fogging up in the rain, the range record might well have been broken.
Scotland produced 2 fives with maximum 150 and four with 149, including 149.21 from Cameron Monk of Dollar Academy, shooting in his first International Match. 8 of the 12 shooters produced maximum 75 at 500x. Top Scot (and highest scorer on the range and thus the winner of the Hossack Quaich) was Ron Scaglione with 150.23. Ron went on to win the Grand Aggregate, dropping only 2 points out of a total of 525. His score was exactly matched (including v bulls) by Euan Munro but Ron beat Euan in a tie shoot. Scots took the top three places in the Grand Aggregate, with third placed shooter, Mike Barlow, not dropping a point until 1000x. Ron also won the Caledonian Shield and Euan won the Scottish Open Championship.
