Fullbore Rifle Phoenix Match Report

For the 5th consecutive year the Scottish Fullbore Rifle High Performance Squad shot in the Berger SW Nationals in Phoenix, with 6 out of the 7 in the squad taking part. The conditions throughout the meeting were comfortably hot with relatively light winds and this, coupled with the quality of shooting, resulted in very high scoring, despite most of the shooting being held at 1000 yards.

Sandy Walker was 4th in the Grand Aggregate with 1238 ex 1250, Lindsey McKerrell 6th with 1237, Ian Shaw 10th on 1235, and Angus McLeod 11th on the same score.

In the matches for teams of 4 firers, Scottish Thistle (Ian Shaw, Angus McLeod, Sandy Walker and Mike Barlow) won the match, over a Palma course of fire, by 6 points and the combined team match by 4 (the latter being the sum of the two team matches). Angus McLeod shot an excellent 449 ex 450 in the Palma match, and Bruce Logan in the Scottish Saltire team shot 448. In the second Team match, Angus McLeod shot 200.14 ex 200, missing his range record, set by him a few years ago, by one central.

Lindsey McKerrell was top lady at the meeting, beating two of the premier US Palma team members in the process. She had the misfortune to have had the stock of her rifle broken in transit on the journey out, but seemed to go from strength to strength when a replacement was sourced, despite it being a different shape and feel from her original one.
